RTI in Detail

RTI is a structured method to assessing students and intervention based on testing. There is a 5 step progress explained beginning with screening. All students are tested on their literacy skills. Students are identified as being at risk or not. The next step is mild intervention in which literacy instruction is given in small groups to improve reading skills. Step three is to monitor the instruction and analyze the progress; what is working and what is not. Step four is individualized instruction for those that are still struggling. All along the progress of each students is monitored. The final step is making a decision to enroll the students in special ed services or not. A big factor in RTI is that it is an intervention program and not a special ed service which can be confused at times. When talking about intervention it is always a build up of the basic teaching from the general ed classroom. Most students are fine in the general ed classroom learning based on the core curriculu...

QRI-5

1. QRI-5 is a formal inventory of material that can be sued to assess students in word identification and comprehension. It is divided according to great level to accurately assess students. 2. Using QRI-5 is important when assessing students in reading and English as a whole. The purpose of this thorough assessment is to help students reach the appropriate level they are supposed to be on. This may mean that students need intervention in order to help them reach the proper grade level. 3. I have never seen anything that was as formal as QRI-5. However, when I taught 5th grade I saw P3 teachers assessing students with different passages and word lists having students read, answer questions and spell the words. 4. I think that QRI-5 is a very effective tool to use when assessing students. It covers many areas and is specific to the grade level which makes it organized and accurate. Students that need extra help can easily be identified through QRI-5 and therefore I would announce mys...

Week 3 Assignment 2

There were great lesson ideas that satisfied a lot of CC Standards as well as students' needs. In the first lesson students can easily be assessed by their review on their recording. I would give out an organized checklist with area to write notes which will include the different components that are important for an effective group discussion. The students will also have room to explain themselves and add further suggestions in the notes area. In the second lesson where students need to persuade their peers to follow their idea a clear assessment should be taken based on the class response to the presentation. This method requires a keen eye since not only does the presentation have to be watched but also the class's response to the presenter. In the third lesson students have to continue the story of another students. It is hard to do an individual assessment since the students will have each of their own touch added in to one big whole. I think that this point actually make...

Reading video series

I found the videos to be very interesting. There was a direct buildup through each video clip. It began with an introduction to the importance of beginning early and infusing your children with a love for reading and interest in reading and writing. Then there was proof that even little babies can tell the difference between sounds as they change through speech. Many of the following videos went through the steps young students go through when learning the ABCs, spelling, how to read, and how to write. All of these steps are according to grad level and can be enriched as students advance throughout the grades. I liked many of the strategies that were used such as using the word "large" and the words that are associated with size. The students had to put the words in order of size which was a great exercise on vocabulary and word usage. At the end there was a short clip on assessment which is an important factor.  Students need to perfect their learning and make sure that they...

Self-Introduction

You can check out my Voki intro here  http://tinyurl.com/y9388qvq My name is Adina Ginsberg and I am looking forward to beginning my third semester in NYIT. I live in Israel and have been here for a year now. I enjoy living here and experiencing a different life than I knew all my years growing up in Brooklyn. If I were to write a book about myself I would title it, "Work by Day, Work by Night, Smile Throughout" since this is really my motto. Life is all about work whether in the classroom, at home or in school but the way to get through it all is to keep smiling and keep on plunging ahead.  A joke that I really like: To night my daughter said something to me that I did not think was the most polite, so I asked her to repeat it in a nice way. She repeated it with a British accent :) I like to bring this into my classroom as way to grab students into English class. In the past I taught 5th graders Science, Math, History and English. Starting a year ago, I began teaching e...
